Chapter 13: The Struggle Within

Friday, 9th November

7:15 AM

“So Mulcahy didn’t tear you apart when you told him that we had Vetrov and Fitzgerald and company under surveillance? That’s bloody amazing,” McGarry said with as much energy as a man who had been up all night could.

“Yea, Mulcahy was his usual cranky self. He just told me to wait a few days before we can bring that scumbag Fitzgerald in,” Logue said as he scoffed down a full Irish breakfast.

Just then a phone started ringing and Logue grinned. “That wife of yours is keeping you on a short leash! Does mommy want you to come home early today?”

“It’s your fecking phone, you idiot.”

Logue looked down at his phone which was buzzing and ringing and was surprised to see it was Patricia. He thought about ignoring the call. Oh fuck it anyway, he thought as he answered the phone.

“Hi Patricia, is everything okay?” Logue said as he hit the answer button.

“Everything is great, how are you this morning?” Patricia said in a voice that was still sleepy.

“Yea everything is ah … fine.”

“I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out, spend a bit of time together, you know? Why don’t you come over? I can skip work if you want. I’m sure Fitzgerald won’t be seriously hurt if I don’t show up for one day and honestly I don’t fecking care anymore.”

“Thanks for your very attractive offer Patricia, but I’m just gonna go home and try to get some sleep, like the cranky old fart that I am.”

Patricia laughed. “Well, just wanted to see how you were, if you were safe. How about you sleep and I’ll call you when I leave the office this evening?”

“Sure, I’ll probably be up by then.”

“Okay, bye, see you later, my hunky detective,” Patricia said.

Logue didn’t really know what to say in reply. He hesitated – he wanted to quit things with Patricia but he couldn’t do it over the phone. That would be too cruel.

“Yea, errr … See you later,” he said awkwardly.

No one had called Logue to check on him and make sure he was okay for a long time. It was strange to have somebody care for him again and it made Logue feel uneasy, guilty and angry with himself. He had only been with Patricia for a few weeks but he had been with his wife for 12 years. He felt like he was betraying her. It wasn’t like there were no ladies in Logue’s life for the past eight years since Geraldine had died, but the amount of time he had spent with them was a few days or weeks at most. They meant nothing. Logue made sure of that. Patricia was getting too serious. She was getting too close, too quickly. He had to end the relationship.

Logue got up from the table, went to the bar and ordered a pint of lager. McGarry gave him a puzzled look.

“Starting our drinking early, are we? It’s only just gone eight. You have been going fairly hard on the sauce lately, Ray.
